Why can’t I assign a membership to a member even though it should be paid by their spouse/partner?
Short answer
It’s not a bug. For member A to pay member B’s membership, you must have both on B’s profile:

a correct family link/relationship, and
-
the Paid by field set to the payer.
If only the family link exists and Paid by isn’t set, assigning the membership to B can fail.
Where to set it (exact places in the profile)

Members → Member Management → open the beneficiary’s profile

General tab → Family section → click Add (+) or Edit

In the pop-up:

Relationship with member: choose the correct relationship (e.g., Spouse/Partner)

Select a member: choose the payer

Paid by: select the payer again (this is the key field)

Click Confirm

Key point: The Paid by field must point to the person who pays. A family link alone isn’t enough.
